2001 Infiniti I30 sedan -
The second generation front-drive I30 was launched last year to rave reviews. The success of Nissan's upscale division seems to reflect the improving overall health of the automaker itself as the medicine prescribed by Renault's Carlos Ghosn, Nissan's president & COO takes effect throughout the company. Together with the introduction of the more powerful QX4 luxury SUV last year, Infiniti is gaining sales momentum and market awareness as the public eagerly awaits the all-new 2002 Q45 sedan due late this spring.
Built by Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. in Oppama, Japan, the I30 sedan continues to evolve with new interior features for 2001 -- steering wheel mounted audio controls, an automatic anti-glare rearview mirror with integrated compass, emergency inside trunk release and two new exterior colors -- Royal Ruby and Midnight Blue.
The I30 sedan is the automaker's midsize entry in the luxury competition. With exterior styling resembling the larger Q45, the sedan is available in the Luxury and Touring models, based on the world-class Nissan Maxima platform powered by the 3.0L DOHC 24-valve VQ six-cylinder engine. This mill transfers its power to the road through an advanced electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with a lockup torque converter.
On the road, the I30 delivers a good balance of substance and control -- a reassuring, calming effect at speed. In fact, this midsize Infiniti turned in the highest speed through my local "evaluation course" I have ever experienced!
An independent MacPherson front strut suspension with stabilizer bar and coil springs together with the rear multi-link beam suspension coupled with an improved steering system makes the magic happen.
The Touring model features a viscous limited slip differential that detects wheel slip and then delivers power to the opposite wheel to help regain control. The Luxury model I30 sports Toyo Proxes A05 215/55R16 tires while the Touring model features beefy P225/50R17 V-rated all-season tires.
Inside the cabin, well placed displays and controls complement the cabin layout. Comfortable seating, plenty of storage space throughout for personal things, front and rear power points are some of the thoughtful touches.
Rear seat passengers enjoy plenty of leg and head room. An armrest, cupholders and 60/40 split rear seat back complete the appointments. The trunk lid opens big and out of the way to reveal a wide and deep cargo area.
