Laredo, Texas is located on the US/Mexican border on the north bank of the Rio Grande. The city is one of the oldest crossing points on the border and is the third largest Mexican border town in the United States, after San Diego and El Paso. Laredo's economy is largely based on international trade with Mexico; there are four international bridges and one railway bridge connecting the city to Mexico.
Washington's Birthday Celebration is held in Laredo every February and is the largest annual celebration of its kind in the United States. The month long celebration includes parades, a carnival, an airshow, fireworks, live concerts, and a city-wide prom, and draws hundreds of thousands of people to the city every year. The celebration first began in 1898 and has been a success ever since.
The city of Laredo owns and manages eight recreational centers, 34 developed parks, five baseball fields, and four plazas. The David B. Barkley Plaza is named for the only Hispanic soldier from Laredo who has received a Medal of Honor and celebrates all hispanic soldiers who have received this award. The Republic of the Rio Grande Capitol Building Museum includes memorabilia from the Republic of the Rio Grande, as Laredo was the capital of the short lived republic. The Laredo Center for the Arts has three art galleries and a theater that hosts live performances and comedy.
The city is served by the Laredo International Airport and the El Metro system. El Metro includes almost fifty bus routes, as well as trolleys and vans. Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University are located within Laredo.
