Known officially as "Space City," Houston has a lot more than NASA going for it. The largest city in the Southern United States, Houston is home to the second-most Fortune 500 companies, which includes major corporations like Phillips, Sysco, and ConocoPhillips. Its port ranks first terms of tonnage shipped internationally. Along with being the home of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston is home to a wide array of research institutions in the fields of aeronautics and biomedicine.

The most attractive destination for out-of-towners is the Museum District, which boasts attractions such as the Houston Zoo, Rothko Chapel, the Houston Center for Photography, as well as many other exhibits and attractions. Nearby is Herman Park, which hosts free shows daily at the Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Transportation in Houston is accomplished mostly through the city’s system of highways. Unlike most cities, Houston has two perimeter highways, with a third in construction. Interstate 610, called “the loop” forms a ring around the downtown portion of the city. Sam Houston Parkway, a toll road, forms the next ring around the city. The last ring, Texas State Highway 99, opened its first section in 1994, but only three of 11 segments are complete. Because of this infrastructure, the vast majority of Houstonians own cars. Pickup trucks are popular models, though other makes are frequently purchased as well.
