A great city for arts, culture, and history, Philadelphia is known for its slogan “the city of brotherly love.” Founded by William Penn, a Quaker, Philadelphia was the first city in the British colonies to have full religious freedom. This liberty allowed Philadelphia to grow into the most important city in the early United States. Now, Philadelphia is a still a major population center, home to a diverse array of people and a rich economy.

Oddly enough, one of the major attractions in Philadelphia is a prison: Eastern State Penitentiary offers a review of history from the perspective of criminals, in addition to jailed innocents. An audio tour lets visitors see America’s most influential prison at their own pace. Guided tours are available for Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed. Of course, you can’t leave Philadelphia without trying a famous cheesesteak from either Pat’s or Geno’s—or both!

Philadelphia is a vital part of the Northeast corridor and maintains strong ties to both New York and Boston. The regional transit authority operates bus and light rail service in the city, which is walkable for the most part. Both the Delaware Expressway (I-95) and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) cross through the city, and the region is served by an extensive system of highways. Because of the narrowness of the streets in Philadelphia, many commuters prefer smaller cars such as compacts and sedans.
