Innovative functionality - 2012 GMC Sierra Hybrid pickup truck
The GMC Sierra Hybrid is a powerful, full-size pickup truck that achieves a 40 percent improvement in city fuel economy and a 25 percent improvement in overall fuel economy utilizing GM's patented two-mode hybrid system. The Sierra Hybrid is every bit a full-size truck – complete with pickup truck capability and towing capacity.
Based on the Sierra Crew Cab body style and offered in both 2WD and 4WD configurations, the Sierra Hybrid is equipped with the two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L V8 gasoline engine that is E85 FlexFuel compatible with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Auto Stop mode.
The GMC hybrid pickup truck delivers highly efficient performance, including all-electric driving upto 30 mph. That allows fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. Torque is communicated to the street through an electrically variable transmission (EVT). The EVT incorporates grade braking and tap up/tap down shift control. It also benefits towing on curves or lower-speed back roads, as exceptionally smooth gear transitions eliminate the "shift shock" torque disruption that can occur during abrupt shifts, such as when slowing or braking.
The Sierra Hybrid's fuel-saving performance is derived from GM's advanced EVT and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which works in concert with the standard 6.0L V8 gasoline engine. GM's hybrid technology allows the gasoline engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods. The two-mode hybrid system generates the power used to propel the vehicle. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is sued to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed. The two-mode hybrid system provides seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package.
Inside the passenger cabin, the Sierra Hybrid is a spacious place with plenty of storage space, comfort and convenience. Flush surfaces, tight gaps and tolerances suggest a crafted interior of above average quality. Large controls and door handles are designed to work with gloves. A large capacity, "double" glove box is integrated into the instrument panel.
Rear seat passengers have not been forgotten, with good rear seat room and comfort. Standard equipment is a stadium-style rear seat with a 60/40-split design. It can easily be folded up to provide an uninterrupted load floor. Either section of the split seat can be stowed independently, allowing room for both cargo and a rear-seat passenger.
