Professional Review for the Volkswagen Cabrio
2000 Volkswagen Cabrio convertible -
What a difference a few years make! An onslaught of new products that are attractive, solid and fast have transformed Volkswagen into the nameplate of choice for young drivers. The German automaker boasts the lowest average owner age (36 years old) in the industry. Their best seller, the Jetta sedan has an even lower average age of 30! The German automaker has fought its way back with a vengeance, introducing an all new series of products designed to attract serious drivers who lack the funds to own one of VW's upscale neighbors.
Available in GL and GLS models, consumers will be impressed with the high value content VW has packed into the Cabrio. It is priced in direct competition with most domestic convertible offerings. The standard powertrain for both models is a 2.0L four-cylinder engine joined to a short throw five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic transmission is an $875 option. The standard drivetrain is willing and responsive.
The body integrity of this small vehicle is bank vault solid. Independent front MacPherson struts combined with an independent track correcting torsion beam rear axle work together with beefy 195/60R14H tires to keep the small VW firmly attached to the pavement. Front and rear stabilizer bars keep the entire package in sync. The wonderful result is nimble handling and performance that inspires confidence at speed.
Inside the cabin, the Cabrio is a combination of chic style and effervescent charm. The chairlike seating position is very comfortable for driver and front passenger, especially during long trips. Displays and controls are good, with the sound system coming up for special mention. It is the easiest setup I have ever used, delivering great sound.
With the top up, the cabin was almost as quiet as a hardtop coupe. It is for sure, the quietest convertible I have ever driven. The manual drop top mechanism is quick and easy to use. A nice touch is the eight cubic feet of lockable trunk space engineered by VW that can even be used with the top down.
By the Numbers
Engine performance numbers are 115 hp at 5,400 rpm and 122 lb/ft at 3,200 rpm EPA fuel economy ranges from 24 city/31 highway for the five-speed manual and 22 city/28 highway for the four-speed automatic using regular unleaded gasoline.
Standard safety features include: dual front airbags, driver and passenger side airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with antilock, anti-intrusion side door beams, roll bar, central locking system, Immobilizer theft deterrent system, alarm system, and daytime running lights. GLS adds halogen front fog lights.
The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price begins at $19,990 for the GL five-speed up to $24,175 for the GLS. Destination charge adds $525. This wonderful car is a rare sight at your VW dealer, but worth searching out. There are no rebates.
