Kansas City, Missouri was founded in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River and is currently the largest city in Missouri. Three professional sports teams reside in Kansas City, the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL), the Kansas City Royals (MLB), and Sporting Kansas City (MLS). Several major companies are headquartered here, including Hallmark Cards, Applebee's, H&R Block and AMC Theaters. The National headquarters for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and one of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks are also located in Kansas City.

This cultural hub is known for founding a style of jazz dubbed Kansas City Jazz in the 1930s and 40s. This style helped move jazz from large bands to the more improvisational Bebop style that Count Basie and Charlie Parker, a Kansas City native, are known for. Barbecue is another Kansas City specialty, with over 100 barbecue restaurants in the area. Kansas City barbecue is slowly smoked meat covered in tomato and molasses based sauces, unique to the city.

Kansas City is nicknamed the City of Fountains, due to the fact that the city has over 200 fountains. The city claims to have the second largest number of fountains in the world, after Rome. Kansas City is also known as "The Heart of America" because it is the closest city to the population center and geographic center of the United States.
