St. Petersburg is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The city is connected to mainland Florida on the north, and several bridges connect St. Petersburg to Tampa on the east. Known as the "Sunshine City," St. Petersburg usually experiences 361 days of sun a year, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive sunny days at 768 days. Due to its wonderful weather and cheap cost of living, this city is a large retirement destination. However, St. Petersburg has been experiencing a more youthful scene in the recent years.

St. Petersburg was founded by two men who bought the land in 1876. The city was named for one of their hometowns, Saint Petersburg, Russia. The other founder named the first major hotel after his own hometown of Detroit. The Detroit Hotel still resides in downtown St. Petersburg, but has since been turned into condominiums.

Two major professional sports team play within St. Petersburg, the baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, part of the North American Soccer League. Though there are currently no minor league baseball teams in the city, St. Petersburg is Minor League Baseball's main headquarters. There have also been several movies filmed in St. Petersburg, including Spring Breakers, Ocean's Eleven, and Cocoon.

The Great Explorations Children's Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the St. Petersburg Museum of History are just a few museums in St. Petersburg. The city also has several large shopping districts, including the Sundial shopping complex that opened in 2014 and the Grand Central District, a more artistic area. The University of South Florida St. Petersburg, Eckerd College, and St. Petersburg College are all located within St. Petersburg.
