Sexy affordability - 2003 Toyota Celica hatchback
Sleek, sexy and affordable. Three words that best sum up the 2003 Toyota Celica -- now in its seventh generation. This Toyota is no mere econobox with two doors! With a unique, one-form cab-forward design with short overhangs, the front-drive Celica looks more at home in the high speed loop of a racetrack than a driveway. Freshened front and rear styling is the story for 2003 -- the first since the current generation Celica was introduced in the 2000 model year.
Derived from the Spanish word for "heavenly" or "celestial," the Toyota Celica was launched in 1971 for the motorist that was "young at heart" and desired more than basic transportation. Some 30 years and many awards and accolades later, Celica continues to deliver on that simple premise -- modern, responsive and desirable -- yet still affordable.
Available in GT and the high performance GT-S models, the 2003 Toyota Celica offers drivers a vehicle that can be equipped from mild to wild! Built at the automaker's Tahara Plant in Tahara, Japan, the Celica is powered by two versions of Toyota's tried-and-true 1.8L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine. Torque is transferred to the ground via a five-speed manual for GT and a sport six-speed manual gearbox for GT-S. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional for both models.
For drivers that want to "customize" their Celica straight from the factory, Toyota is offering the "Action" exterior package for both GT and GT-S models. For $1,590, the automaker adds an aggressive front bumper, rocker panels, rear aero bumper and a large adjustable rear wing. Color-matched with the body color, the "Action" package upgrade is covered under the car's standard warranty.
On the road, the Celica GT is peppy, nimble and responsive -- "light on its feet" like a ballerina. Control and balance at speed are typical Toyota - buttery smooth. This is a vehicle that consumers will want to drive -- often! Following a strict recipe for sports car handling, the Celica features quick, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and a four-wheel independent suspension. MacPherson struts with offset springs and a solid anti-roll bar control the front, complemented by rubber bushings and anti-dive geometry ensures ride comfort and excellent steering feel.
The rear suspension hardware consists of a double wishbone configuration that incorporates a camber-control function with a solid anti-roll bar.
Inside, the cabin resembles a fighter jet's cockpit more than a mere earthbound vehicle. Comfortable and straight forward displays and controls are easy to read and operate. The audio system captures favorite stations -- strong and clear -- thanks to the mast antenna at the rear of the vehicle.
Seating is both comfortable and supportive. The rear seat is a 50/50 split, maximizing available cargo space. Cupholders are built into the sides of the vehicle making the rear seat a snug but pleasant place for two passengers.
